You
may be surprised to know that a Global Hand-Washing Day (GHD)
exists and that was created by the Global Public-Private Partnership
for Hand-Washing on October 15, 2008 with the objective of
supporting the global culture of hand-washing with soap and
to raise awareness about the benefits of hand-washing. Though,
this was meant for schools and children, now over 200 million
people in over 100 countries are celebrating this event for
over a week with hand-hygiene promoting activities, programs,
posters etc.
This year’s Global Hand-Washing
Day gave the message “Clean Hands Save Lives.”
The Centers of Disease Control
(CDC) says “Keeping hands clean is one of the best ways
to prevent the spread of infection and illness.”
How do hands spread infection?
When we come into contact with germs that are found in millions,
almost on every surface we touch, we unknowingly spread these
germs causing infection into our eyes, nose, or mouth and
once they are infected, and within a short time we fall sick,
and our whole family can fall sick of the same illness!. Children
happen to be the most vulnerable germ-catching and germ-spreading
category. One may pass on the infection through sneezing or
coughing (droplets). Unclean hands or impure water can pass
germs to food prepared by him or her. Germs can be spread
to us by coming into contact with sweat, saliva or blood of
infected persons. It is obvious that our hands happen to be
the main source of germ-carriers and hence a good hand-washing
becomes the first line of defense against the spread of many
illnesses right from the common cold to more serious illnesses
such as infectious-types of diarrhea, meningitis, bronchial
infections, influenza, hepatitis A etc., We can spread germs
from raw meat to raw salad through our hands. We must be careful
while dealing with fecal matter because even a very small
fragment of contamination on our hands is enough to cause
a serious infection. It is even prudent to think twice before
shaking hands with people or simply remember to wash off the
germs afterwards at the earliest. Though, soap and water is
the best for hand-washing, now one has the liberty to use
alcohol-based hand sanitizers too.
By the way, you may already be
washing your hands however are you spending 20 seconds to
wash your hands each time? If the answer is no, then hereafter
sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice in front
of the wash basin to make-up those 20 seconds. Not only the
amount of time you take for hand-washing is important you
need to learn the right method and frequency for washing hands.

techniques to use for washing your hands.
