Do you know that the number 4 represents
the lowest 'Honest Number' in math? A number is defined honest if
it can be written using the same number of letters using English
alphabets. In this case the number 4 is written as FOUR which has
exactly four letters - F, O, U, R! There are other numbers which
can be written using the same number of letters that the number
represent - example: 8 (two cubed), 11 (nine plus two). In fact,
any number greater than or equal to thirteen can be written using
the same number of letter as the number represent. Curious? Look
for proof here.
Number four occupies a special
place in our world. There are 4 seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter),
4 directions (north, south, east, west), 4 moon phases (full moon,
gibbous, crescent, new moon), 4 nitrogenous bases in a DNA (Adenine,
Thyamine, Cytosine, Guanine), 4 legs for many animals, 4 degree
Celsius - the average temperature of the oceans. Our playing cards
has a suit for four (heart, diamond, clover/club, spade), bee has
four wings, a lucky clover has 4 leaves, pop music is in 4/4 time
scale, cricket has four umpires (Fourth umpire is also known as
reserve umpire who will step in as an umpire if anything happens
to 3 umpires. In addition, he perform duties like bringing on the
new ball, carrying drinks to the on-field umpires, checking light
meter batteries and observing the pitch during the lunch and tea
intervals to make sure there is no interference.) On the other end
of the spectrum, in Japan, China and few other Asiatic culture 4
is considered inauspicious and hence shunned!

Four legs of a horse ...
|
“If a statue in the park of a person on a horse has
both front legs in the air, the person died in battle;
if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person
died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the
horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died
of natural causes.”
