Introduction to "leetspeak" and 'txt Acronymns' !
Do
you know what this means? |-|0\/\/ r j00Z d01|\|9?
This means "How are you doing?" in text language
also known as "leet speak" or "alphanumerish"
speak.
"Leetspeak"
which was popular among the hackers and derived its name
for "elite" users has now become the staple of
teens texting. The mix of numbers and letters make the words
difficult to interpret.

The
character "!" or "1" replaces the
letter L, "3" poses as a backwards letter E,
and "7" is the letter T, etc. Other examples
of character/letter replacement include using "8"
for the letter B, "9" for G, and the number
0 for the letter O.
-
Non-alphanumeric
characters may be combined to form letters. For example,
leetspeakers use backward and forward slashes to create
this shape "//" to stand for the letter M. Two
pipe symbols combined with a hyphen ("|-|")
can be used in place of the letter H. For example, by
adding a character/letter replacement of the number 4
for the letter A, the leetspeaker might form the word
"harm" as "|-|4r//."
- Some
times words are misspelled intentionally or added with suffixes
like orz for emphasis.
Teens
use both leet words and various message acronymns to make
interpretation still harder. There are now more than 1500-3000
leet words and acronymns and it is growing every day. Some
of the words are used very surreptitiously by teens. If
you are a parent and have a teenager, it may be high time
for you to learn to decode "leet" messages.
