In this month, we have picked songs to pay tribute to TM Soundararajan also known as TMS.

TMS served the Tamil music industry for more than six decades. During this period he sang more than 10,000 movie songs and 3000 devotional songs. Success did not come easy to him. He was rejected by music composers as they felt his voice cracked at high pitches. So he started working in film celebrity houses hoping to get a break through them. Finally, it did come through the director Sundar Rao Nadkarni who recommended him to music director S M Subbiah Naidu. S M Subbiah Naidu gave him an opportunity to sing 5 songs in the movie Krishna Vijayam. Things did not change overnight. He was still an unknown entity until he got an opportunity to sing for Shivaji in the movie "Thooku Thooki" and for MGR in the movie "Mandhiri Kumari". Initially Sivaji was reluctant to accept TMS as he felt that singer Maruthakasi's voice fitted him well on screen. TMS offered to trial a song for him in Thooku Thooki. So he went and met with him and observed his way of pronounciation and voice. Later he sung the song which impressed Sivaji so much that he agreed to have him sing more songs for him in the. On the other end, MGR heard his voice while he was recording for Sivaji and insisted for him to sing his song in the movie "Mandhiri Kumari". The rest become a history. He became 'the singer' for all Sivaji and MGR movies. He modulates the song according to the actors that fans can say who the actor for a song is!
