Alzheimer’s
disease is the most common form of dementia, in which the
victim slowly loses his or her memory. The cause of Alzheimer’s
disease is the buildup of plaque in the brain which slows
its function. There are methods to slow Alzheimer’s
disease but there is no way to fully cure it. Alzheimer’s
disease affects about 820,000 people in the UK. Scientists
have known for a while that Type 2 diabetes is related to
Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, a team at City College
in New York conducted a study on nematode worms. Nematode
worms have a similar gene to the Alzheimer’s gene. Professor
Chris Li discovered that the genes also affected the insulin
pathways. Insulin is needed to digest food in the body. A
low amount of insulin leads to food being stored as extra
fat also known as diabetes. Li announced that people with
type 2 diabetes are more likely to get Alzheimer’s disease.
More research needs to be done on the link between the 2 diseases.
It could help us finally find a cure to the devastating Alzheimer’s
disease.
Here is a video pick which provides
some insight into Alzheimer's disease and how it is linked
to diabetes.

Life is all memory, except ...
“Life
is all memory
except for the one present moment
that goes by so quick
you can hardly catch it going.”
